While today it’s possible to wirelessly throw photos, music, videos (and more) from an iOS device, to the Apple TV – with relative ease, Apple could be investigating methods which involve reversing the way its “AirPlay” data transfer technology works, so that users may in the future be able to throw content from their Apple TV – back to iOS.
The patent, entitled “Displaying a synchronized instance of content on a portable electronic device,” describes a method and system for displaying a “synchronized instance” of content on a portable electronic device.
Apple gives one main embodiment in the newly granted filing. That being “the selection of streaming content that is being displayed on a fixed display system,” which is then received by the portable electronic device.
“In a nutshell, if you’re watching a movie on Apple TV and want to get some popcorn and drinks, you may not have to stop the movie,” Patently Apple, who relays details about the patent filing, reports.
“You’ll just sync the movie stream from your Apple TV to your iPhone, iPad or maybe even your future Apple Watch and it’ll allow you to watch your movie while you’re grabbing those snacks.”
While the feature may sound like it should have been there from the start, and granted – it sounds useful, the idea remains just that for now. An idea.
The only difference now is, Apple has the rights over the methods involved in hopefully, and eventually, making it happen … for real.
The full patent filing is available to read at the USPTO.
